Elio Altare has been called the "father of modern Barolo" and along with Angelo Gaja, is the one man most responsible for the rise in quality, fame and fortune experienced in the hallowed hills of the Langhe over the last three decades. When Elio got started in the 1980's, Barolo was barely more valued than Dolcetto, and today it is revered as the "wine of kings and the king of wines" due mainly to improvements directly from Elio's weathered hands.

Elio's greatest achievement was his commitment to only the absolute finest fruit possible in the vineyard. Organic farming, meticulous 365 days-a-year canopy management and incredibly low yields of only the most perfectly ripe fruit are now the accepted road map to high quality Barolo.

The results speak for themselves: numerous Tre Bicchieri awards, Wine Spectator Top 100s, a mention as one of Robert Parker's Top Ten Winemakers in the world and universal respect in the winemaking community...the list goes on and on. The universal depth, elegance, fragrance and complexity found in the Altare wines simply cannot be found anywhere else. In 2016, ownership officially transferred to Elio's daughter, Silvia Altare, with an eye towards the future. Her father, she says, started the Barolo revolution, and now it is her turn to continue his work with the evolution of the winery.
