Very quietly, and for over 30 years, Rosemary Cakebread has been producing some of the best Cabernet in the Napa Valley. With a degree from UC Davis, she took her first harvest job at the historic Inglenook Winery, where she fell in love with the grape variety. After a bit of globe traveling, llincluding a harvest in Bordeaux and some work with sparkling wines around the world, she returned to her roots in Napa where she became the winemaker at Spottswoode Estate.

After 16 incredibly successful years at Spottswoode, Rosemary stepped back to a consulting role so she could pursue her own label - Gallica. The name refers to a type of rose often used in the art of perfumery, a craft Rosemary has long studied for its obvious parallels to winemaking. The project consists of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and the iSuzurii series of Rhone-inspired blends. The former is sourced primarily from Rosemary's own organically-farmed two-acre plot in St. Helena. The latter comes from the Shake Ridge Ranch, a fantastic site in the Sierre Foothills that supplies fruit to a handful of California notables. lBoth wines are elegant, restrained, true-to-place, and possess an inherently delicious quality that make them immediate favorites of all who taste them.

The Roussillon may be in France, but the village of Maury is Catalan, so it's not surprising that Evan would look to Spanish varieties. Albariño is sourced from Ann Kraemer's Shake Ridge Ranch, the Tempranillo from the Vista Luna Vineyard, farmed by the godfather of California-gorwn Spanish varietals, Markus Bokisch. Both wines are made at the Kongsgaard cave on Atlas Peak. Says Evan, "I produce only as much as I can make with my own hands."
