Anyone versed in the language of ultra-premium Napa Valley Cabernet has heard of the Herb Lamb Vineyard. Everyone else is destined to learn the name sooner than later. This seven-acre parcel on the stony foothills of Howell Mountain provided the raw material for some of Colgin's most memorable wines. But as smart growers do, Jennifer Lamb has been saving the  best blocks for her HL and Two Old Dogs wines.

The Roussillon may be in France, but the village of Maury is Catalan, so it's not surprising that Evan would look to Spanish varieties. Albariño is sourced from Ann Kraemer's Shake Ridge Ranch, the Tempranillo from the Vista Luna Vineyard, farmed by the godfather of California-gorwn Spanish varietals, Markus Bokisch. Both wines are made at the Kongsgaard cave on Atlas Peak. Says Evan, "I produce only as much as I can make with my own hands."

Under the guidance of Vineyard Manager Michael Neal, this impossibly steep site is farmed sustainably without the use of machinery. Rigorous selection ensures that only the most perfect bunches find their way to Winemaker Michael Trujillo, whose job is to then raise the exquisite berries into something more profound and more complete. The intensity of sight allows a healthy dollop of new French Oak and extended barrel aging, creating a final product with enough luscious fruit to enjoy now, along with the structure and backbone to live on in the bottle for years. Two Old Dogs is a companion label named for the late Herb Lamb and, of course, his faithful companion. "Junior" versions of the HL wines, these bottles are imbued with a sense of whimsy and the intent for youthful consumption.
