The Treis family has an ancient and venerable connection to the stony slopes of the Mosel River. They have farmed grapes in the tiny municipality of Rail since 1684, learning over the generations every nuance of the vineyards. Since 2008, Weingut Julius Treis has been under the control of young Tobias Treis, who is breathing new life into the estate while honoring the storied tradition that precedes him.

Tobias's approach in the cellar is best described as "hands-off." Fermentation begins with ambient yeast. It proceeds slowly, under strict temperature control and with minimal pumping or filtration. Truly, the wine makes itself with the winemaker present only to guide it from grape to bottle. Tobias is uncompromising in his pursuit of quality, always striving to maximize flavor, freshness and balance. 

"Wine is nature and tradition," says Tobias. Both are honored in the vineyards, where all chemical applications are eschewed. Rather, natural farming practices are employed to promote healthy soils and healthy vines. Tobias has greatly reduced crop sizes, and stringently selects only the best fruit to enter the winery. Full ripeness is the key, so that the wines are able to express themselves without technological intervention.
