2015 Rosso di Montalcino DOC
The hills surrounding the town of Montalcino in central Italy are home to a unique expression of Sangiovese. Located approximately 70 miles south of Florence, the region is in general warmer and drier than most of Chianti. Add the cooling, maritime breeze that caresses the vines by night and you have the perfect conditions for a lush, full-bodied style characterized by balance and structure. This is Brunello di Montalcino, and Siro Pacenti is one of the most renowned producers of this epic wine.
"Giancarlo Pacenti is by far the leading exponent of the modern school of Brunello di Montalcino. No other producer has succeeded in crafting wines of this much textural beauty and refinement."
-- Antonio Galloni
The story of Siro Pacenti begins in 1970, when the eponymous founder purchased a small swath of land in Pelagrilli, north of Montalcino. Siro passed the torch to his son Giancarlo in 1988. During his time at the helm, Giancarlo has overseen the expansion of vineyards to the southern side of Montalcino (purchasing a 5-hectare vineyard originally planted by his maternal grandfather) as well as the construction of a new, modern winery in the early 2000s.
The marled, galestro soils of the northern vineyards provide plenty of structure to wines, while the more clay-heavy soils of the southern site impart fruit and power. It is this combination that has come to define the house style of Siro Pacenti, and today they are one of the most decorated estates in the region, receiving top scores and accolades from Italian and American critics every vintage. The abundant quality in this lineup is evident from the Rosso di Montalcino (produced from young vines grown on the same hallowed soils that produce the Brunello) to the ultra-precious Riserva PS, the product of a single 1.5-hectare vineyard planted in the early 1970s.
